Which book should I refer to for Ethics Integrity and Aptitude?

If one will look closely, one will find that the exam pattern for GS IV Ethics Integrity and Aptitude in UPSC Mains Examination is quite different from the other GS papers. This paper requires a unique preparation strategy. Unlike all the other GS Papers with 20 questions each, GS Paper IV has only 14 questions.

Now coming to the point, there are some limited sources in the market for Ethics GS Paper IV, but we should know what is good for us in that limited source too. Thus, preparing for Ethics in UPSC MAINS Examination becomes a daunting task, as this is a little offbeat subject in comparison to the other three General Studies papers.

Paper IV concentrates equally on theory and case studies and thus, one should make sure that they are balancing the practice of both types of questions. Here we will see which books come under the good books for studying Ethics, Integrity and Aptitude.

My personal favourite is EDEN IAS Ethics 4 set books written by Tirthankar Roychowdhary Sir. Books are

  1. Theoretical Framework on Ethics:

The book consists of all the possible relevant matters of standard books. Subbarao’s book and Lexicon’s book can be substituted with Roychowdhary Sir’s this book.

  1. 70 Thinkers and Thoughts of Ethics:

This book consists, the national and international thinkers with their thoughts. These thoughts can be used in answer writing.

  1. Case Studies Practice Workbook on Ethics:

This book is a compilation of 100 case studies. This is basically a practice book of case studies.

  1. A to Z- Ethics Glossary (Terminology):

The book covers all the terminologies of the ethics syllabus for a quick revision.

If one wants to refer to any other books then they can refer to anyone of the following

A). Ethics, Integrity & Aptitude:  G Subba Rao & P N Roy Chowdhury

This book consists of many case studies and this book is a very useful book for beginners in the UPSC CSE Examination. It has been written by two retired IAS officers.

B). Lexicon for Ethics, Integrity & Aptitude: Niraj Kumar

By far it is considered one of the best books for ethics in the UPSC CSE Examination. This book is the best book for knowing the tips and strategies for solving case studies in GS Paper IV. This book consists not only of tips but also the definition and explanation related to Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude.

C). Ethics, Integrity and Aptitude: Santosh Ajmera and Nanda Kishore Reddy

It gives a detailed account of various theories of ethics and it also gives a glimpse into the moral and ethical dilemmas faced by administrators in their professional lives.

D). Ethics in Governance: Innovations, Issues, and Instrumentalities by Ramesh K Arora

This given book analyses the reasons behind corruption in public systems. This book also talks about the importance of ethics and integrity in the system and it also discusses the need to design such a system to implement sound government practices. This book also consists of the Second ARC report on Ethics in Governance

E) ARC Reports

This report is very important for the Ethics answer writing. Before going into UPSC Mains Examination one should at least go through the summary of this report. The Second ARC Report on ‘Ethics in Governance’ recommends the following values in civil services: integrity, impartiality and non-partisanship, objectivity, dedication to public service, empathy, tolerance and compassion towards the weaker sections. Such information’s very helpful in answer writing.

Note: EDEN IAS books need to be complemented with 2nd ARC reports only.
