A Compelling Brand That Altered Everything

When it comes to environmental sustainability, organic and natural ingredients, and socially responsible manufacturing techniques, most people familiar with Aveda are aware that the brand is a pioneer in the beauty industry. The tremendous vision and modest beginnings that have driven it to this point are things that they may not be aware of.

Horst Rechel bacher is the only person who is responsible for the commencement of origin Aveda‘s history: he is the founder. Horst was a hairstylist, salon and spa services owner, artist, inventor, and businessman who set an example by establishing a corporate culture with an environmental and social conscience and served as a mentor to many people, assisting them in their personal, professional development. Additionally, Horst served as a mentor for numerous others, assisting them in their career and personal development. Horst passed away on January 14, 2019.

Horst was not the first person to come up with the notion of “natural” beauty products, nor was he the first to use the term. In the case of Aveda, he was successful in elevating the company to a more stylish, hip, and luxury reputation.

My nostrils filled with the scent of hairstyling as I took a big inhale.

In 1965, Horst was involved in a car accident in Minneapolis, and as a result of his injuries, he was hospitalized for many weeks. A few months after returning from the hospital, he moved to the city and started the Horst & Friends hair salon chain there. At that point of time, he was on the cusp of attaining 24 years of age.

Herbal treatment was used to help Horst restore his health when his health began to deteriorate in the late 1960s due to stress-related disorders. Horst’s mother, Maria, aided him in restoring his health via herbs. Aromatherapy, yoga, and meditation were all used in concert to help him achieve his physical and emotional equilibrium.

Horst rekindled his childhood interest in plant medicine in 1970. He went on to study the ancient system of Ayurvedic therapy to become a physician, which he achieved. He spent six months in India, where he learned about the herbs, essences, and plants that are used in Ayurvedic therapy and how to prepare them.

His first business venture was the Aveda cosmetics brand, launched in 1978. Due to the herbal tonics and tinctures made by his mother, Horst developed his first two products (Clove Shampoo and Cherry Almond Bark Conditioner), which he mixed in his kitchen sink. The practice of Ayurveda is the origin of the name “Aveda.” It wasn’t long before Aveda included up to 1,500 different plant species into its products.

Aveda rose to prominence as a result of its enticing smells. Despite the fact that the scents generated by flowers and plants have been shown to have good effects on our minds, bodies, and even the environment, Horst was unaware of this.

At the time of its introduction, the practice of creating cosmetics from botanical ingredients and testing them on humans (rather than animals) was considered a passing fashion. It was never expected that these alternative ways would be effective in an industry that is mostly reliant on drugs generated in labs and tested on animals, yet they have been.

In today’s world, being an environmentalist is a requirement. “

Following an oil spill off the coast of Alaska in 1989, Horst guided Aveda to become the world’s first beauty brand to sign on to the Valdez CERES Principles, which obligated corporations to act in the best interests of the environment. In response, the corporation began implementing increasingly ecologically friendly approaches in both its sourcing and manufacturing processes.

During the course of its existence, Avenue has established itself as a global leader in corporate environmental and fair-trade principles. These included recycling, the use of renewable energy sources and organic agriculture, in addition to promoting the employment of craftspeople in developing nations through fair and sustainable trade linkages, among other efforts.

Horst’s personal convictions motivated the Aveda brand’s choice to combine fundraising for environmental causes and cancer research into its business approach.

By reaching ever-higher standards for environmental stewardship and conscientious living, the Aveda firm continues to preserve Horst’s purpose and vision today. As of Jan 2022, the company’s entire product line was completely vegetarian or vegan, signifying a tremendous step forward in sustainability that had been years in the making.
